Impakt Works: Kurt d'Haeseleer

Share |

This summer Kurt d'Haeseleer is residence artist at Impakt Works in Utrecht. Impakt has featured work of d'Haeseleer before. At the Impakt Festival of 2005 the movie Fossilization (a collaboration with Wies Herman) and in 2007 his movie Rock was shown.  In 2004 and 2007 he performed with TUK (Guillaume Graux) and together they formed an impressive audiovisual pair.

Kurt d'Haeseleer's work focuses on the visualisation and symbolisation of the dynamic of information and data traffic in these times of fibreglass cables, computers and modems. He studies the physical and urban impact of speed and translates the all-encompassing presence of media into meta-photos. Special effects play an important role in his work that can best be described as a 'pixel drama' or 'pixel soap' and which are often at the cutting edge of painting, video clips, cinema and performance. For more information about Kurt d'Haeseleer see the link below.

As a residence artist at Impakt Works Kurt d'Haeseleer will work on his 'Archaic Smile'. This work shows a fictionalized 'History of the World'. Images from archaeological theme parks are transformed into a phantasmagorical surveillance landscape by means of special effects. These theme parks consist of true-to-life reconstructions of houses and buildings from several important eras of world history. However, under the surface, the medieval or prehistoric appearance of these parks obscures the fear and revulsion from today's modernity and idolizes the old rural and traditional community with its  values and strong sense of togetherness. History turns into a sanitized place where even an epidemic disease such as the plague, or war and fighting are re-experienced as moments of
great pleasure and fun.

'Archaic Smile' will be produced within the framework of an Impakt Works/EMARE residency with the support of the City of Utrecht. This project will be funded with support from the European Commission, Culture Programme (2007-2013).
