Habitat and UtopiaA program with six films about quests for happiness, intimacy and perfection in contemporary urban settings. From futuristic fantasies to hard social realism and from intimate and sometimes somewhat sad encounters between complete strangers to world wide happiness. The Habitat and Utopia program: Wohnhaft - Bernhard Marsch (Germany 2004, 9 min, originally 35mm, screened on video) Just like people, houses can sometimes be read like a book. Pictures from the past, failed love affairs and an obsessive urge to collect. What I'm Looking For - Shelly Silver (USA 2005, 15 min, video) A personal ad by the artist reads: "I am looking for people who would like to be photographed in public revealing some part of themselves (physical or otherwise). No other relationship will take place outside of being photographed." This 15-minute high definition video narrates an adventure – a somehow fictionalized version of strange intimacies or connections between the subjects and the artist. It is the tale of the interface between public space and the Internet, photography and moving images, desire and the act of seeing – and of a woman who photographs men. Can you feel it - Michael Gibson & The Jacksons (USA 1981, 4 min. video) The Jacksons created a mini-movie music video to accompany their Triumph album which culminates in computer-enhanced images of the Jacksons as benevolent giants sprinkling glittering magical dust over the world. Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey - AL+AL (UK 2004, 6 min, video) Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey is about one of the AL's grandfather, James Brown, an inspired engineer and inventor. The film simulates his quest for the secret of perpetual motion with an end goal of giving free "power to the people". During a telephone conversation with the Lamb of God, Britney Spears sabotages this attempt to discover the laws of nature in order to further her own hunt for infinity. This conflict results in a series of alchemistic events, concluding in a land flooded with milk and honey. Like earlier works this piece is chock-full of symbolism, new-age-isms and references to Hieronymus Bosch, classical mythology and pop culture. ‘Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey’ is a digital video epic in which the makers seem to criticize the modernist conception of science and encroaching philistinism in an increasingly scary and capitalist society. Driftwood - Oliver Payne & Nick Relph (UK 1999, 23 min, video) Sincerely and overwhelmingly romantic, Driftwood pulls focus in and around the inner city of London, questioning the uses of urban archeology and monitoring civil behavioural devices. Skateboarding's appropriation of the city's urban environment is the focal point of a psycho-geographical journey that flickers between the macro and the micro, the personal and political, utopianism and reality. All I Need - Mike Mills & Air (USA 1998, 5 min, video) If it could only be always that simple. Californian Sunsets, idyllic suburbs, perfect skate tracks and the love of your life.
