(2004) Translations For any citizen of the modern world, translation is a day-to-day reality. Languages, currencies, information, data, gestures and even emotional responses all come to us requiring some form of conversion from one format to another. While neo-liberal promises of globalization often involve a common language as much as a common market or currency, critics of this process cry out over the dangers of a shared language or economy which only benefits and is enforced by the most powerful nations. At a more local level, real and virtual communities find their own strengths in shared systems and environments, each of which require their own methods of translation to accomodate each person fairly. The world of the internet is also a world engaged in translation. Whether it is a computer translation of one written language to another or the written translation of one computer language to another, the deliberate translation between machine algorithm and human action or the automatic translation between data formats, all of these actions illuminate our experience as contemporary citizens and netizens in fundamental and critical ways. The starting point for this launch of Impakt Online projects is the examination of how translation relates to the making of artworks on the internet. The projects respond to the topic in a way that acknowledges and uses the technology involved to its best effect, but at the same time transcends the media to address 'translation' on a thematic and socially-engaged level. All works selected reflect a unique insight into our dual citizenship on and off the web, and strive to make relations and translations between the two.
