De Zondagsschool #3: 'Conspiracies/they think we are unaware of'

Share |

Sunday Afternoon Event about art, research and media phenomena

Assume that nothing in the world happens coincidentally or by accident and that everything is always premeditated. Then purposefully deny the existing and generally accepted explanation for what happens. Subsequently, take a handful of insignificant facts and provide these with new, exaggerated meaning. Appoint an enemy and ascribe as many bad intentions as possible to this enemy.
Discredit the influential persons who endorse the accepted explanation for what happens. Label them as stupid or bad, or make them part of the conspiracy. Stretch the statements and proof of experts in such a way that they will support your own theory. Avoid contact and discussion with critics. Discredit them if they become too troublesome. Warn people for new dangers and call out for alertness.

(Niccolo Machiavelli, 1469-1527).

In (mass) psychology the human inclination of contriving conspiracies has been extensively described. Indeed, conspiracy theories confirm our fears, but at the same time restore new order to our worldly chaos. This edition of the Sunday School lists the ingredients for a good conspiracy theory and presents spin watchers, writers, artists and frontier scientists who have all developed their own vision on the way in which media, multinationals and politicians try to influence our perception of reality.

Including: media-scientist, folklorist Peter Burger, artist Debra Solomon, spinwatcher Eveline Lubbers and frontier scientist Rick Devente.
Visuals including Martin Hansen (Paradise Drift, 2006, 13') and Sterling Ruby (Cook, 2003, 1'26").
Presentation: Klaas Kuitenbrouwer.
