Impakt Event: Guy Ben-NerIn his short films, Israeli artist Guy Ben-Ner evens out the boundaries between his studio, the family environment and public space. Drawing his inspiration from Buster Keaton slapstick movies, the conceptual video works of Bruce Nauman and American sitcoms, Ben-Ner developed an entirely genuine form of conceptual comedy. Next to being funny, his works also raise questions about basic values such as ‘the family’, ‘home’, ‘territory’ and ‘property’. His most recent film ‘Stealing Beauty’ was awarded first price at the KunstFilmBiennale in the Ludwig Museum in Cologne. He recorded this film with his wife and two children in several Ikea branch stores spread out over three different continents. Set in the middle of the shopping public, a number of soap-like scenes were played. And upon being demanded to leave the store by the Ikea staff, these scenes were continued in another Ikea branch store. The prefab Ikea rooms provide the film setting in which father and mother Ben-Ner attempt to teach their son moral values after catching him stealing. In doing so, Ben-Ner incidentally also stages the family as an emotional and ethical barometer. Next to the screening of ‘Stealing Beauty’, Guy Ben-Ner will also present several other films at this Impakt Event and tell us about his work.
