Impakt Event/Impakt Works: Aleesa Cohene

Share |

The work of the Canadian video artist Aleesa Cohene is characterised by the use of ‘found footage’, existing film material usually taken from feature films and information films. Important subjects in her work include the interrelation between individual emotions of people and their behaviour towards others, and the way in which individual emotions relate to the political discourse and current tendencies in society.

In the autumn of 2007, Cohene produced the work ‘Something Better’ as Impakt Resident Artist. This video installation consists of three monitors, which each show a different film. Spectators are confronted with separate film characters who soon merge into three personas. By means of editing techniques and the soundtrack to this work, Cohene creates interaction between the three characters with a strong focus on their psychology and emotions. She stages the characters while having arguments, discussions and dialogue with each other.

At this Impakt Event, Aleesa Cohene will present her video installation Something Better and also show some of her older works.
In addition, Cohene comprised a programme featuring works of Fiona Tan and Arthur Lipsetts and will screen parts of a group therapy session led by Fritz Perls, one of the founding fathers of Gestalt therapy.

During the presentation, Aleesa Cohene will be interviewed by Rosi Braidotti, prominent professor at the Human Science department of the Utrecht University.
