… Leaving behind an itinerary for a beautiful audio walk through the infamous shopping mall of Utrecht.

Last week the German sound artist Christina Kubisch was in Utrecht to develop an exclusive “Electrical Walk” for the upcoming edition of the Impakt Festival.

“Electrical Walks” is an extensive project that was initiated by Kubisch in 2003. Other places where these walks took place include Japan, the United States and Slovakia. This year Utrecht is the Lucky one.

These walks are part of an ongoing research to electromagnetic layers in our surroundings. In the walks Kubisch utilizes specially designed headphones that translate electromagnetic signals into sound waves. Making it possible to detect for human ears.

Kubisch  maps on a designated area all the electromagnetic ‘hotspots’. For example ATMs, subway lines and visible and invisible security systems. These invisible layer that is permanently surrounding us become audible through these headphones. The result is a beautiful sound collage of rhythms, pulses and drones.

The walks also have an ecological dimension. Electromagnetic radiation is everywhere around us despite all possible dangers. In that sense the project also points to society’s incapability to cope with the darker side of economic growth.

In addition, now we finally know which shops have working security systems and which don’t!

During the Impakt Festival from 13 untill 17 the everyone can discover this magical experience.
