Virtual Marathon - Virtual Marathon Team
Welcome to Virtual Marathon. This is the ultimate running game and the
first game in the world to offer players the experience of running
without moving! The course of this marathon takes you around the world
through several servers hosted physically around the world.
The Internet is often considered a “flat and smooth” network, in which
all information is unaffected by territorial borders or other physical
limitations. By being part of a Marathon, the participants will notice
that their “running” speed changes with the different locations. This
is where physical limitations come into play. Limitations like server
speed, location of the server, geographical position of the runners,
all those factors become relevant by participating in the Marathon. The
players/virtual runners are in the same race but under different
circumstances. The difference physical factors can make in experiencing
online activities, even in winning or losing, are quite astonishing.
Virtual Marathon Team has developed an entertaining method of
visualizing these differences.
Virtual Marathon allows the participants to experience the Internet in
a totally different way and hopefully provide them with a whole new
perspective on the Internet. This project was presented for Impakt
Online’s “Net.art is dead”-theme. It tries to clarify the relationship
between what goes on online, and factors of the “real world” that could
influence the online-experience.
