Save Your Skin - Gazira Babeli

Gazira Babeli (Gaz) is a code performer born in Second Life on 31 March 2006. In his work he is always exploring the different layers of poweroperating in Second Life. Although Linden Labs regulates performance within their digital domain for instance by forcing users into signingrules of agreement or by prohibiting offensive behavior, it is not primarily protocol restrictions Gazira Babeli is targeting in his work. Not so very different to the so-called "real life", people restrict their imagination. Social rules and regulations lead to self-censorship, which prohibits users to really explore the possibilities an online environment seems to offer. And the use and abuse of power is always also based on avatar behavior. In Save Your Skin Gaz has created a space where the skins of avatars are being put on display. Unlike objects like a chair, within Second Life an avatar's skin - which in a very profound way designates ones identity - cannot be modified, copied or sold. Users have to buy a new skin every time they want to change it. In this work Gaz not only critiques this simulation of the open market ideology operating worldwide. But, at the same time, provides more freedom to the identities.
