Yarrow - DepartLeonard Lass and Gregor Ladenhauf, both born in Austria, have been collaborating since a few years under the title Depart. Depart flirts, as in a triangle relationship, with audio, video and text. Depart produces unbalanced surroundings, hot-wired improvisation tools, warped storylines and great quantities of sound / noise. Lass is a graphic and visual designer and focuses mainly on the visual part. Ladenhauf works as a musician and is mainly concerned with audio as an artist. They meet at the textual level, which forms the basis for their visual and musical ideas. The Yarrow project is a poetic audiovisual work, based on the system of I Ching (the book of changes). “We are interested in the meta-translation of the oracle, when someone uses it by asking questions. In this process, wishes and desires are systematically given a direction and a place in a dynamic scheme. The user can then ponder the result, and accept and receive it without restraint. The oracle of I Ching opens up the decision making process and stimulates it metaphorically. It places the problem within a semantic space where it can be viewed from a different perspective. Then, it can be translated back to reality.” In their Yarrow project, Lass and Ladenhauf have translated a concept / system to a different domain or dimension. At the moment, there are simple electronic versions of I Ching on the Internet, and there are also other projects that approach the possibilities of the oracle using random number generators. However, none of these projects utilize the mathematical structure of the Internet in a systematic manner, nor do they reflect the poetic power or the possibilities for dynamic change. What Depart liked in the project was the binary structure of the I Ching system, which can be compared to the (linguistic) system of computers. People even claim that Leibniz was inspired by the mechanisms of I Ching when he formulated his system. Furthermore, attempts have been made to link the sixty-four hexagrams to the sixty-four information junctions, or codons, that DNA consists of. The most important aim of ‘Yarrow’ was to emphasise poetic structures within the inherent structure of the system and the audiovisual interpretation of the various dynamic layers (in the original, the changing relation between yin (static) and yang (energetic) in the hexagrams). The translation of I Ching can be viewed as a linguistic concept. We all try to translate the things that other people tell us to a private language that contains our personal desires and hopes.
