QUESTIONS AND ORDERS

At the request of the Flemish cultural centre De Brakke Grond, Impakt compiled a Belgian/Dutch program about control, communication and manipulation. With works by Erik van Lieshout (NL), Dora Garcia (B) and Sven Augustijnen (B).

The program is:

FRANÇOIS, Sven Augustijnen, België 2003, 23 min.
Sven Augustijnen regularly explores the grey area between docudrama and fiction. This video features François, an aphasia patient during his treatment by a speech therapist. Aphasia is a language disorder due to brain damage that causes patients to partly or even completely lose their ability to communicate. François can recognise objects for instance but cannot categorise or associate them adequately. This leads to funny and endearing moments that are at times of a poetic beauty. This video highlights how important communication is. And how we tend to take it for granted.

GLASS WALL, Dora Garcia, België 2003, 30 min.
The Glass Wall started as a performance in which two people were permanently in contact with each other through a mobile with a headset, and gave each other orders. In the film, we see two girls cautiously but curiously making each other's acquaintance. Their conversation soon turns to a charged role play in which sexual tension and manipulation are dominant. The spontaneous balance of power between the manipulator and victim evolves into a delicate understanding.

At the moment Dora Garcia’s solo-exhibition Code Inconnu can be visited in the S.M.A.K. (Ghent). The exhibition runs till the 7th of May.

UP!, Erik van Lieshout, Nederland 2005, 18 min, dv on dvd (Courtesy Bob van Orsouw Galerie, Zurich)
Erik van Lieshout lives and works in Rotterdam. Van Lieshout gives a raw presentation of reality in his drawings and video installations. He especially relishes showing human behaviour that is controversial. Within his direct, un-restricted and humorous approach, there is room for doubts and vulnerability too however. In recent years, Van Lieshout has started pointing the camera more often at himself. The video installation ‘Up!’ is an example. As a consequence of recurring symptoms of depression, he became involved in a series of therapeutic treatments. The video camera is a silent witness to all these sessions, but also serves as a ‘mirror’, as an instrument of reflection. Van Lieshout: ‘One of the strengths of my work is usually the way I approach others. This film focuses more on myself. In the end, the main question is: how can you be happy and an artist at the same time?’

After the presentation, Arjon Dunnewind will enter into a dialogue with Erik van Lieshout and Sven Augustijnen (t.b.c.).

Impakt @ De Brakke Grond / Questions and Orders is part of the Club Voyeur program. Four times a year, De Brakke Grond screens films in this program, every time around a different theme, a different genre, different makers… The only thing connecting the nights is the passion for film and the firework afterwards when Dutch and Flemish image lovers enter into a discussion.
